New Orleans Times, March 13, 1878: In spite of all protest
the U.S. Canonicus has remained in the channel oposite the
head of Canal Street, she has been the cause of the destruc-
tion of two steamboats, the first the GARRY OWEN and the
last the SHANNON which boat just from the Ouachita River
collided with the Canonicus on Sunday morning at 2 a.m.,
and will prove a total loss with cargo. The SHANNON was
owned by Cap. DeHart and Ch.H. Arthur, valued at 15.000
Dollars and isured for 8.000. She had cargo of 600 bales
of cotton and 13.000 staves.
